Colonial
Spring was founded in 1946 in Hartford, moved to Bloomfield
in April of 1958 needing more space, and in January 1977 moved
to Bristol needing more space and to be in the center of the
spring industry labor pool.
In
1946, Colonial had three employees and 1200 square feet of
space in a loft in Hartford. In April of 1958, Colonial had
twenty two employees and had a building built in Bloomfield
that had ten thousand square feet of space. In January of
1977. Colonial moved to 95 Valley Street in Bristol, into
a space of twenty six thousand four hundred square feet with
room to expand. In March 1999, Colonial Spring purchased the
machinery, inventory and customer list of the Han-Dee Spring
Company of Hartford. Today we have forty four thousand square
feet.
Raymond Therion started the company in 1946, and in 1956 David
Small bought a 66 2/3% interest in Colonial and incorporated
on July 1, 1956. In October 1972, Stuart Small started and
in 1973 Ray Therion passed away and Stuart Small and his brother
Gilbert bought out the 1/3 share of Ray Therion and owned
Colonial 50/50. In 1978, Stuart bought out Gilbert Small and
is now sole owner and sales manager. Loren Godfrey has been
president since 1995 and is an MIT engineering graduate.
Stuart Small - graduated University of Connecticut with a
B.S. in business administration, after graduating Stuart was
a 2nd LT in the U.S. Army Armor. Worked at V.C.A. from 1958
- 1963 in internal sales. From 1963 - 1972 was a commercial
real estate broker. Presently Stuart is Sales Manager of Colonial
Spring and has been with us since 1972, serving most of those
years as president.
